Structure of ovum (egg)

  • Spherical and non-motile. About 0.2 mm in diameter.
  • Ovum has 4 membranes:
    a. Plasma membrane (Oolemma): Innermost layer.
    b. Vitelline membrane: Attached to plasma membrane.
    c. Zona pellucida: Transparent non-cellular layer found outer to the Vitelline membrane.
    d. Corona radiata: Outer layer formed of follicle cells.
