Intra Uterine Devices (IUDs)

  • These are inserted by doctors or expert nurses in the uterus through vagina. This includes
  • 1. Non-medicated IUDs (e.g. Lippes loop)
  • 2. Copper releasing IUDs (e.g. CuT, Cu7, Multiload 375)
  • 3. Hormone releasing IUDs (e.g. Progestasert, LNG-20)
  • Make the uterus unsuitable for implantation and the cervix hostile to the sperms.
  • IUDs increase phagocytosis of sperms.
  • The Cu ions suppress motility and fertilising capacity of sperms.
  • IUDs are ideal contraceptives for the females who want to delay pregnancy or space children.
